Reeco Automation Inspires Next Generation with Robotics Donation to Newtown College

The power of collaboration between education and industry was highlighted at Newtown College which hosted a remarkable day of exploration into robotics, engineering and IT.

Cutting edge industries like Reeco Automation are helping shape the curriculum at Newtown College and the extraordinary event showcased the fusion of learning and real-world application. Among the day’s highlights was the generous donation of a cutting-edge robot to the College, setting the stage for an inspiring journey into the future of technology and learning.

The event was made possible through the partnership between education providers in Powys and forward-thinking businesses like Reeco, who held workshops with Newtown College students and pupils from Newtown High School and Ysgol Dafydd Llwyd.

The Deputy Mayor Mike Childs, of Newtown and Llanllwchaern, a former science teacher was also at the inspirational event along with Mid Wales Manufacturing Group.

This collaborative working fosters a real approach to STEM education demonstrating problem solving with real world applications and Reeco had a team of skilled workers on hand to help students get the most out of their time they had with the robots. They also learned how to programme the robots to carry out various tasks. Several members of the Reeco team were past and present college students. These included Rob Francis, operations technician who had studied welding and operations manager, Nick Howells, former electrical student.  Current IT student George Trainer was also present and also has  a part-time position with Reeco. The job opportunity came about as part of an Employer in Residence event at the College and means that following completion of his studies on Level 3 IT this year he has now been offered full- time work with an agreement to further fund a degree course.

Nick Howells, Reeco Operations Manager said: ‘We want to work in collaboration with college as much as possible. By donating the robot, we hope this cements a positive relationship for the future. We hope we can continue to visit the College to show off new solutions to the students and foster career opportunities for students to progress and work locally.

Aimee Lane, Head of Engineering commented:‘The Engineering department want to thank Reeco for organising a remarkable event and their most generous donation of the robot. It will ensure that students gain a unique learning experience. We are looking forward to continuing work with Reeco and the local community to develop and enhance the learning experience for our students.’

NPTC Group of Colleges, Director of Partnerships, Kathryn Dunstan concluded the event saying: ‘Today has been a thoroughly successful event engaging both local schools and college learners with local employers. It has given learners a chance to see real life applications and meet with potential employers. We hope to continue this positive approach to working and thank all those involved in making this a successful and enjoyable event.’
