MEMBER NEWS: Training company’s head of IT achieves Degree Apprenticeship with honours
The head of information technology at one of Wales leading training companies has been rewarded for his commitment to lifelong learning by achieving a Degree Apprenticeship with the Open University.
Alex Hogg, 43, who has worked for award-winning apprenticeship provider Cambrian Training Company in Welshpool for 17 years, has graduated with First Class Honours in Applied Software Engineering.
His journey reflects the very best of work-based learning: personal dedication, professional growth and the power of investing in people.
Supported by Cambrian Training Company, Alex balanced his role managing IT and data analysis with four years of weekly academic study time, culminating in the Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree
“I didn’t think I was that academic and was surprised to get first-class honours,” Alex said. “As I’m quite well organised, it was a matter of meeting the deadlines and criteria. The degree benchmarks my skills and gives me a real confidence boost.”
Throughout his studies, Alex applied his learning directly to the business, developing several bespoke software applications that have streamlined internal processes -from expenses to travel - saving staff time and improving efficiency.
His role is central to the company’s operational success, ensuring accurate data analysis and reporting to meet an £8 million apprenticeship contract with the Welsh Government.
“When I started, the contract was under £1 million,” he reflected. “Now, we rely on real-time data to guide investment decisions and deliver high-quality training and mentoring to individuals, businesses, and communities.”
Alex’s achievement is testament to his commitment and a reflection of Cambrian Training’s belief in growing talent from within.
“We couldn’t be prouder of Alex and all he’s achieved,” said Faith O’Brien, Cambrian Training Company managing director. “His commitment, curiosity and quiet determination are a brilliant example of what work-based learning is all about.
“At Cambrian Training, we believe in growing our own – investing in people, nurturing talent and creating space for lifelong learning. Alex’s journey shows just how powerful apprenticeships can be: unlocking potential, building confidence and delivering real, lasting impact across the business.
“It’s been a win-win for Alex, the team and the future of our organisation.”
